The Body Factor

When the shell of a body becomes separated from life, are there possibilities other than turning it into a sculpture?

Based on the distance between the body and sculpture, this exhibition connects the distance between the body of the artist and their sculptures. Going beyond the definition of person, people, human, and the human body, based on the form of the flesh and sculpture as the medium, three sculptural artists reveal how they respond to different relationships with body:

Chiang Yi-Jin created body parts, such as hands, feet, and thighs, with the use of auxiliary tools interweaved among parts of the body. Furthermore, various methods, such as wrapping, dragging, and squeezing, are used to present the manufactured objects. After the body is replicated it leaves the body, and becomes a body that can no longer move independently. Just like a body that is hurt and loses mobility due to illness or accidents, it loses the ability to speak up. However, the use of tools can help the injured to walk again. Objects are also presented in their most appropriate appearance by the method of placement, tools, space, and more, to explore the facades and attitudes of life.

Exploring the multifaceted aspects of human beings, such as habits, outer appearance, body, feelings, and physiological response, Shih Jin observes each aspect one at a time to get closer to the reality of humans. Based on her dual identity as both a human and the creator, looking outward or escaping the self and imitating a third-party non-human observer, she depicts a realistic human outline. Using the human body as the media, Shi observes the relationship between humanity and self, exploring the unique characteristics of humans as a biological species. The artwork, consisting of wood and metal, also embodies Shi’s outlook on life, attempting to outline a look that is closer to the true reality of humans using non-traditional sculptural statues to inspire the empathy of viewers.

Taking various human body parts, the work of Chan Yung-Jen reveals traces of life with layered flesh, as a shared tool for others and the self, outlining a journey traversed together by the body and the spirit. The periodic swinging motion, tired postures, stripped skin, flesh under pressure, and the transformation of various materials used for the limbs vs the torso are displayed next to each other. The visual, simulating a deformed human life while creating an oddity that is both real and surreal, describes the growth, hopes, and trauma of human groups in modern society.

Sculptures are the product of intensive physical labor, to be re-explored during the creative process through continuous physical perception. Sculpture is also a type of art where the use of materials is crucial. Different materials are similar to the different textures of various parts of the body, bringing non-verbal sensations to a viewer’s vision and sense of touch. Based on attempts to socialize, objectify, and otherize the human body, this joint exhibition aims to present the sculptural body and physicality to stack up multi-layered narratives of fleshy desires and fables.
