2012 New Taipei City Traditional Arts Festival - Divine Generals in Luijhou

Introduction

The activity centers on the Divine General culture in Luijhou which is constructed by integrating many local cultural elements aims to accomplish the following:

1. Public participation

The participation of temples, art groups and the local culture workers demonstrate the charms of Luijhou culture. While providing a healthy leisure activity to the public, their understanding of the local characteristics and the religious culture as well as the recognition toward the land they live in will be increased via the pilgrimage of the divine generals as well as trips to historical sites.

2. Constructing an artful life

The exhibition of divine generals will help bring the culture into the life of the public and increase their exposure to the culture to make it a part of their lives.

3. Sustainable development in Culture

Promoting the features of Liujhou by connecting the local historical sites, religious beliefs and local delicacies improve the public's cultural literacy and their life quality.

About the activity

1. Pilgrimage of Divine Generals

The 18th day of the 9th lunar month is the Renunciation Day of Bodhisattva Guanyi. Divine generals of every temple make a pilgrimage on this day to begin the activity. On the day of the grand opening, dignitaries of every temple are invited to attend the ceremony and the pilgrimage begins in the afternoon.

2. The Exhibition of Divine General Culture

The Divine General Culture Exhibition is held in the activity center of the Baohe Community Development Association. Miniature divine generals, divine general's introduction boards, and related artifacts of divine generals are set up in the exhibition. In addition, Professor Yang Lian-Fu, Chairman of the Love-Your-Hometown Association in Luijhou District is giving speeches at scheduled times. His speeches are about the development stories of Luijhou, legends of Luijhou divine generals and relationships of various gods with various temples. In-depth tours of divine general culture given by volunteers are available to the public inbetween the speeches. School field trips are also being arranged so that children of Luijhou have a further understanding of the traditional culture of their hometown and seeds of culture are thus rooted. Statutes of divine generals, introduction boards of these divine generals as well as related artifacts are also exhibited in the township offices.

3. The Praying for Good Fortune Activity

Local temples such as Yong-Lian Temple and Baohe Temple are invited to give away good fortune talisman with a small prayer for good luck card inside. People may write down their wishes on the card and hang it in the pray-for-good-fortune zone in Yong-Lian Temple and Baohe Temple.

4. Folk parade formation workshop

Na-Cha Folk & Arts Troupe is invited to perform the origin of Kai-Ji Eight Generals to introduce the origins of Luijhou divine generals and demonstrate the uniqueness of the Luijhou divine generals so that the public further experience the charms of the divine general culture.

5. Folk Art Performances , DIY Activities and Competitions

Folk art related performing groups from schools and the community are invited to perform. Other activities include DIY activities such as divine generals face painting, dough figurines, Chinese knots, grass weaving as well as fun games, such as Zhi-Jiao Contest, kicking shuttlecocks, and walking on stilts. The aims of these activities are to raise the public's awareness of and interest in the traditional art culture.
