(10/29-10/30) Sanzhi Water Bamboo and Waterwheel Festival

Objectives

Sanzhi District is an agricultural district with many terraces and abundant water resources. The local government hopes to promote agricultural tourism and leisure industry through cultural activities held in October during the harvest time of the local main produce - water bamboo combining with the unique local waterwheel culture and the participation of the local artists. The aims are to promote diverse development in local features of agricultural industry with the combination of creativity, integration and attraction.

Introduction

Sanzhi District is blessed with natural cultural landscapes. The primitive agricultural villages, special sea of flowers, terraces and the local specialties have contributed to its primitive folklore and food characteristics. In order to promote such special product culture of Sanzhi, the local government has combined Sanzhi specialty - water bamboos, waterwheel culture and the influences of the local artists to present its unique culture, traditional arts, and local delicacies of each village and community through this festival so that families may come to Sanzhi and experience the features of "Sanzhi Water Bamboo and Waterwheel Festival".

About the Activity

1. A trip to flower fields in the fall - Based on "Adjustment Program of Paddy and Upland Field Utilization", potted flowers are grown in paddies, making the best use of local paddies and attract visitors.

2. The Water Bamboo Fun Game - Teaching the public how to peel water bamboo quickly and nicely. A peeling competition is held to make it more fun.

3. Trash Recycle -Skins of water bamboos are recycle by grinding and cooking to be paper pulp. The pulp is then further ground by grinder and sieved out paper. Air dry the sieved paper and voila, the beautiful handmade pepper! More related artifacts will be developed later.

4. Waterwheel DIY Game -A DIY activity is held in each of the 5 Waterwheel Areas for promoting traditional culture, craftsmanship and principles of natural science ( such as how to make steles, stone rubbing, water magic, straw woven, paintings, etc.) so that visitors will be able to experience and learn more.

5. One-Day Trip in Sanzhi - You can either register individually or as a group. Trips are available every day for more than 20 people registered. The itinerary includes: Water bamboo harvesting > A Trip in Sanzhi> Water Bamboo Meals > Visiting the Leisure Agricultural Area. Visitors will be able to stay away from the hustling and bustling cities and bathe in the beauty of Sanzhi to experience the agricultural life.

Local Highlights

Waterwheels had contributed greatly to the agricultural development of Sanzhi. The early settlers used waterwheels to husk rice and make tea. There were over 20 waterwheels in Sanzhi. The scene of waterwheels in the village was common in the early years and the clicking sounds of waterwheels were a childhood memory for Sanzhi people. Fude Waterwheel Ecological Area is located next to the Balian River of Fude Village and is the biggest waterwheel Park in Sanzhi now. Featuring "sightseeing", "ecology" and "health", visitors not only enjoy the fresh air in the forest, but also enjoy the vast green scenery which is full of wild lives and birds coming and going in its diverse environment.

< Li Tien-Lu Hand Puppet Historical Museum> Mr. Li Tien-Li performed hand puppet shows, taught how to manipulate hand puppets, and promoted hand puppets for more than 70 years. He was honored with "Important Hand Puppet Artist" by the Ministry of Education. In order for this traditional art to be preserved and developed permanently, he established Li Tien-Lu Hand Puppet foundation. The ground floor is a multi-functional performance hall for teaching, introducing and performing hand puppet shows; the second floor is an exhibition hall that exhibits props, hand puppets and stages collected by Mr. Li Tien-Lu over the past dozens of years. It is officially opened to the public in January of 2005. There are 3 floors in total. The first and second floors are for artifact sales and dining area. The third floor displays the hand puppets made by the master Huang Yi-Que from Quanzhou, China. There is a path that connects the new and old buildings and many artifact experience areas are added, such as a hand puppet experience area, a back stage music experience area, a hand puppet show experience area, a DIY area and a video game area. In addition, the sensor-control video/audio guiding equipment is installed in every display cabinet.

Located in the Zhilan Community of Sanzhi District, stretching for one kilometer long, the crescent-shaped Qianshui Bay has fine white sands and crystal clear sea water and is close to the shallow reefs extending for several kilometers. The rich marine lives in the reefs are suitable for families to pick shells, crabs, and go fishing. There are quite some waterfront facilities installed there, including scenic dykes, wood trials, observations and waterfront trails. There are many special coffee shops available there, providing visitors a place to drink coffee while enjoying the ocean view. Qianshui Bay has become a hot spot for would-be married couples to take wedding photos.
