2012 Indigo Dye Festival of New Taipei City

Introduction

The organizer hopes to establish the brand and core values of Sanxia Indigo Dye products through passing on and re-engineering indigo dye. By combining daily life and popular elements, the city government continues to promote cultural exchange about indigo dye. A series of activities are planned, and by working with communities and school groups, the community participation is expanded and charms of the indigo dye street are demonstrated. In this way, the indigo culture industry and local tourism are promoted. Indigo dye is one of the specialties of Sanxia district. The government has recruited locals who are interested in indigo dye art to participate in the training project so that they have more opportuniy to learn and be exposed to indigo dye. Training more professionals to join the indigo dye industry will help revitalize the industry and further build recognition and coherence between old and new Sanxia people toward this culture industry.

About the activities

1. Blue Art Feast: The government has invited local outstanding performing groups to work with local communities and schools to demonstrate the beauty of combining performing arts and indigo dye craftsmanship. Via the hustling and bustling atmosphere of the art festival performances through speech and singing, music, dance and drama, the public can experience the history and culture of indigo dye in the dancing blue shapes and music. The culture and vitality of indigo dye are exhibited.

2. Indigo Dye DIY Activity: Via the Indigo Dye DIY Activity, Sanxia Indigo dye history, plants for extracting indigo dye and the manufacture of indigo dye product are introduced. Simple dying methods will be demonstraed on-site to let the public experience the fun of indigo dye. In order for Sanxia people to experience first-hand the beauty and fun of indigo dye and for training little indigo-dye lovers, in addition to indigo dye DIY activities every weekend indigo dye classes are also available on weekdays for elementary school students from remote areas or underprivileged students.

3. Indigo Dye Product Exhibition: Using Sanxia History Museum as a platform for the indigo dye industry allows the public to experience the beauty of historical relics in the area. Moreover, product exhibitions of the local famous indigo dye designers are available and indigo dye artists all over Taiwan are invited to hold joint exhibitions for artistic exchange. The government aims to improve the creative development of indigo dye craftsmanship by promoting localization and making indigo dye an art while making it a part of the locals' daily life.
